Meet Jaime Agnew

Legal Background

Jaime has practiced law in Lucas County for nearly 17 years and today serves as an Assistant Public Defender with the Toledo Legal Aid Society. Through December 2023 she was a Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio, and from 2018 to 2023 she sat as a Magistrate in the Toledo Municipal Court, where she handled civil claims, criminal, and traffic dockets. During those years she also represented the 6th District on the Ohio Association of Magistrates board while keeping her civil practice at Agnew Law Office, LLC.

Before the bench, Jaime spent most of her career as a solo practitioner and as an Assistant Public Defender representing youth in the Lucas County Common Pleas Juvenile Division. She litigated permanent and temporary custody matters, served as attorney and guardian ad litem for children in Children Services cases, and represented parents and families in juvenile court. Her general division work included divorce, dissolution, and criminal defense, and she was admitted to represent clients in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy in the Northern District of Ohio.

She began her career as an associate at a statewide bankruptcy firm and, before that, as a paralegal at a large workers' compensation and personal injury practice — experience that has taken her into courtrooms in municipalities across the county.

Education

Jaime's first paying job in the law was as an intern in the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office, mostly in the Juvenile Division — a placement she first earned as an unpaid Reinberger Scholar during her second year at the University of Toledo College of Law. She went on to receive the Women's Bar Association scholarship in her third year, reached the Moot Court quarter-finals, and finished runner-up in the National Online Dispute Resolution Competition representing UT Law.

As an undergraduate at the University of Toledo she earned a B.S. in Biology. She came to Toledo as a Patricia Ann Sullivan Scholar — turning down a track scholarship elsewhere to do it — and took part in the Leadership UT program all four years.

Personal History

Jaime grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio, graduating 10th in a class of nearly 300. She was class president all four years of high school and was named Female Student Athlete of the Year for basketball, volleyball, and track — she still holds her school's record in the 100M hurdles. She also debated for four years, choreographed and danced in every high school musical, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

She is married to her high school sweetheart, Aaron. Together they have two sons, three dogs, and — after taking custody of Jaime's younger brother when he was nine — a granddaughter who has made them (technically) very proud grandparents.

Community service has been a constant. From 2018 to 2023 she supported charitable projects through the OAM board, and one of her favorite volunteer days remains working as a “hugger” at the Special Olympics. More recently she and her campaign crew volunteered at Acoustics for Autism in support of Project iAm, an event they plan to help with every year.
